Rural Field Days Go Virtual

Aussie Virtual Events have announced that, for the first time, they will be hosting Virtual Rural Field Days from Sunday 23rd of August to Wednesday 26th August 2020, and at Global Tanks, we’ll be setting up our very own digital exhibit run by our team of industry experts and professionals.

How Urban Tanks can Secure Water for Dense Vertical Gardens

Urban Tanks are a fantastic option for those who want a water storage tank but are working with limited space or in an area where space is at a high premium which is often in cities, hence the term ‘urban tanks’. Similarly, vertical gardens are the perfect way to implement eco friendly and sustainable practices in urban areas that are becoming increasingly developed and built up, without taking up too much space. Vertical greening systems are essentially a wall full of vegetation and greenery and can either be standalone or designed to form around the actual walls and structure of a building. These vertical systems combined with an urban tank are becoming an increasingly popular choice in cities all across Australia and it’s easy to understand why.

Besides the standard benefits of an urban tank such as reducing your bills and the provision of alternative water supply, combining a vertical garden with an urban tank means that you’re essentially creating an entire nutrient water cycle. Below is just a few of the amazing benefits of using your urban tank to secure water for a vertical garden:

Aesthetics

This is the perfect way to create a beautiful green space in your urban home, apartment building, or commercial space. Being in an inner-city suburb doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice having nature in your space. What’s more, including plants and greenery in your design is a timeless classic that will never go out of fashion.

Low maintenance

When using an urban tank to secure water for your dense vertical greening system, you essentially end up with a self-sufficient garden which will look luscious all year round.

Minimal space requirements

As mentioned previously, you can design both your urban tank and garden around the space that you have available to you which means that you don’t have to worry about sacrificing a large amount of space in your home or building.

Insulation

When adding a vertical garden to the walls of your home or commercial building, it adds a very effective layer of insulation to the space. Your dense vertical garden will essentially help to keep the building cool during summer and warm during winter which is highly energy-efficient and will significantly reduce your energy bills.

How to Keep your Water Tank Clean

When using a water storage tank, it’s vital that you maintain it properly in order to ensure safe and sanitary water as well as to extend the life of your water tank as much as possible. By completing some routine maintenance as well as carrying out an annual clean, we guarantee that your water tank will be hassle-free and last for many years to come. Below are some of the best and most effective ways to ensure that your water tank and the water inside it, stay clean:

Maintain your Roof

Regularly inspect your roof to make sure that it’s clean and clear of debris. Check for clumps of leaves and twigs that may have gathered and cut back any overhanging trees or branches to prevent further buildup. It’s important to inspect for dead insects and animal dropping as you don’t want these contaminating your water. Bat droppings on your roof are one of the biggest issues to look out for as water contaminated with bat faeces can become poisonous. If you have a look at your roof and feel like it needs a good clean, make sure that your water storage tank is disconnected from the water flow as you definitely want to avoid the dirty water flowing into your tank.

Keep your Gutters and Filters Clear

Not only will this will help to maximise your water collection, but it will also make a big difference in your efforts to keep your water tank clean. What’s more, keeping your gutters free from debris is an important step in fire prevention. Just like your roof, you need to conduct regular inspections of your gutters and remove any buildup. For optimal cleanliness in your water tank, you may want to consider getting gutter guards installed so that there’s much less chance of any blockages ever occurring. Alternatively, if you want to go all out you can even invest in a self-cleaning gutter system.

An Internal Inspection

Every now and again you need to examine the inside of your water tanks to look for insects and small creatures flying or swimming around inside. You definitely don’t want a frog hopping around in your drinking water! And even worse than a live animal inside your water tank is a dead animal, which could end up making you and your family very ill.

A Thorough Clean

Once a year, towards the end of summer when the water levels are lower, you should give your water tank a thorough cleaning. This is also ideal timing as any sediment or sludge that may have built up will be closer to the outlets.

  • Step one: Turn the power off and ensure that any plugs are pulled from sockets.
  • Step two: If your tank has separate valves, you should ensure that the cold water valve is turned off and the hot water valve is turned on.
  • Step two: Attach a water hose to the draining valve and direct the water to your garden so as not to waste the water. Empty your tank as much as possible.
  • Step three: Using your garden hose, run fresh water through the tank inlet to ensure that any remaining dirty water is flushed out. Continue doing this until the water flowing from the outlet is clear.
  • Step four: If you have a leaf guard or first flush diverter, clean them to ensure that all dirt and debris is removed.
  • Step five: If you have a cartridge filter, change it if necessary. This will depend on the last time the filter was changed as cartridge filters should be replaced every 6-18 months.

Top Tip

An extra tip for keeping your water tank clean is to add chlorine to the water if you suspect that it may be contaminated or have bacteria in it. You can add powdered swimming pool chlorine or liquid chlorine but you should not use stabilised chlorine. Adding chlorine is a safe and effective way to disinfect the water in your tank and the water will remain completely usable and drinkable. The amount of chlorine you use will depend on the size of your tank and the amount of water in it.

Animal Management: Choosing the right trough

When it comes to looking after your animals, it is a job that requires taking care of the unexpected when it happens and also putting the right equipment and systems in place to ensure things run smoothly far more often than not. Choosing the right trough for different animals, alongside knowing which ball valve you should be using based on the pressure of your water are essential considerations for any farmer.

Several factors come into play when selecting the right trough for your different animals. Possibly one of the most important features is the material of the trough. Unlike metal troughs, our range of Polyethylene troughs are completely rust-resistant and are not heat-conducive, meaning the contents stay cooler for longer periods.

Often the weak-point for most troughs is the valve and with an extensive number of variations to choose from, which one really is best? To begin with, make sure you choose a valve rated to your water supply pressure this is key. Generally, we recommend two kinds of valves a low or high-pressure float valve. The Low-pressure valve is good for applications with pressure below 25PSI. A high-pressure valve is good for applications that have pressure up to 120PSI. It is also useful to remember that valves placed further down a hill have a higher shutoff pressure requirement than those positioned higher up.

If you are tossing up between plastic, brass, stainless steel, or bronze and you have acidic water, some brass valves can leave material behind as they are more likely to leach zinc from alloy. The vast majority valves we supply are brass, but we also do stock stainless steel in our victorian factory.

While the practicalities of finding the right trough are crucial for keeping animals healthy, it is just as important to look at the feed for cattle when the quantity and quality of available feed become low due to drought. Fortified molasses is an easily accessible option suitable for drought feeding bigger numbers of stock. With Queensland molasses, specifically, being low in protein, it must be fortified by adding protein to balance the feed.
