Rotational moulding case study: designing a rust-free toolbox

The Global team have once again donned their hats as the Sherlock Holmes’ of rotomoulding! When approached by Booth Transport with an ongoing problem, the team put their sleuthing skills into action to find a solution. Discover how Global Rotomoulding solved the rust-free toolbox case for Booth Transport!

The case of the rusty truck toolbox

Booth Transport’s trucks carry hoses which were constantly leaking in their storage boxes, causing rust and corrosion. Booth found that they were frequently replacing these storage boxes at a large cost. In many cases the water was even leaking out of the boxes and onto the tray bed, causing further rusting. They approached Global with the issue in hope of initiating a collaborative venture which would have these two businesses working together to find a solution with the help of plastic.

The sleuthing process

Global travelled down to South Australia to assess the situation, recognise the challenges and discuss Booth’s options. They carried out the following steps that they’ve become known for in their dedicated custom plastic design services:

  • Recognising the key criteria.
  • Discussion with Trymark Design Engineers to design and produce concept drawings of the proposed product which met these criteria.
  • Constant reviewing of the product design to assess its suitability.
  • Quotes sent to Booth Transport for the moulding and labour costs.
  • Final design approved by Booth Transport.
  • Quotes gathered from several mould makers to obtain the best deal for value and money.
  • Final design sent to chosen mould maker (in this case, offshore).
  • Inspection of the moulding process at varying stages to ensure the mould met the stated specifications, dimensions and criteria.
  • Final mould shipped back to Australia to undergo rigorous testing and trials to establish the right shot weight, cook and cool times.
  • Making of jigs to assist with the demoulding process.
  • Final sample product sent to Booth Transport for approval.

 Cracking the case

This collaborative process resulted in the Booth Transport rust-free toolbox, which would house their hoses and prevent corrosion to their trucks. The toolbox is situated under the truck tray bed and is made of plastic to prevent rust from leaking hoses. Some of the standout features of the toolbox include:

  • Fully stackable
  • Rust resistant
  • Includes an easy finger grab recess
  • Has integrated handles and hinges
  • Has a variety of configurations
  • Includes a weather tight seal
  • Can be secured
  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Impact resistant
  • Easy to clean

Solving problems and creating opportunities

Global’s collaboration with Booth Transport not only assisted in solving their ongoing problem but also generated a new rust-free toolbox product for the transport market. Collaboration between industries is essential when opening up new opportunities and avenues for expansion. Global have a strong history of collaborations and continue to lead the way in innovative plastic design.

Making a statement

Complimentary colours are those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. They make each other pop in a fun and bright way. If you have a unique home, why not play up these features by choosing complimentary colours for your house and tank? Red and green is a common combination, as is orange and blue. We’re particularly fond of Deep Ocean, which goes will with rusty reds and oranges.

Picking up on accents

Are the eaves, doors or window sills on the outside of your house painted in an accent colour? Choosing a tank in the same colour is a great way to incorporate it without making everything too uniform. Cottage Green is a common accent without being too bright.

Matching your roof to your tank is super easy if you want the colours to be exactly the same, because you can use colorbond steel! Choosing a high-quality cartage tank: What to look for

You don’t want to mess about when you’re choosing a cartage tank. A quality cartage tank can make all the difference, and when you’re transporting important substances such as pesticides, molasses or feed, you want to make sure it’s up to the task.

We’ve put together a list of things to look out for when you’re buying a cartage tank, to ensure you’re investing in a product that will last.

UV Stabilised

The Australian climate is hot, and this often affects cartage tanks of all kinds, as well as their contents. Heat intensifies when it hits metal, so steel cartage tanks will naturally heat its contents when the temperature rises. Global’s plastic cartage tanks, however, are all UV stabilised to suit Australian summers.

Food Grade

If you’re going to be carrying feed in your tanks, you’ll need to ensure that they meet all food grade safety regulations. The same goes for drinking water. This is possibly one of the most important factors to take into consideration, as unsafe storage of food and water will have a drastic effect on your livestock.

Outlets, sprays, pumps and sumps

Make sure your tank has the correct outlets that will allow you to use it for everything you need. If your tank comes with sprays or pumps – great! If not, make sure the connectors you want to use will fit into the outlets.

Easily cleanable

If you’re purchasing a tank that holds between 6000 and 15000 litres, you’re going to want to ensure that it is easy to clean. A smooth internal tank surface will aid drainage.

Sturdy Mounting

The size of your tank will depend on the type of mounting you will need. Many smaller tanks will be free-standing, however, larger ones can be pin-mounted or have their own separate feet for extra stability. Global’s Bigfoot range of tanks (2000 to 15 000L) include moulded in hold down points, the feet have added strength because of their dual skin moulding, and you even have the option of installing a water holding tank in the feet! Make sure the mounting of your tank will support the size and load you plan on carrying.

Balanced

Correct balance is important for tanks carrying over 2000L. Ensuring that you implement products in conjunction with the Load Restraint Guide criteria is essential to maintain safety when turning and braking a vehicle bearing a tank. We recommend our Baffle system, which is low in volume but high in surface area, ensuring that your vehicle and its contents remain balanced at all times.
