Eddie, The Echidna Who Stole Our Hearts

Sometimes, the most rewarding stories come from the places you least expect.

Recently, we received an inspiring update from a wildlife rehabilitation group we support. They introduced us to Eddie, a young echidna who has been hand-raised from a tiny puggle after arriving into care.

When Eddie first came into care, he weighed just 200 grams, a small and vulnerable little echidna needing specialised support and round-the-clock attention. Fast forward to today, and Eddie is now approaching 1kg, a huge milestone in his journey!

Like all good echidnas, Eddie has a few quirks of his own. He’s shy and prefers life away from the spotlight, spending most of his days buried deep in mulch or tucked safely in his den box. Wildlife carers tell us that catching Eddie “out and about” is a rare treat.

But this Mother’s Day, Eddie surprised his carers with a rare daytime appearance, marking a special moment in his rehabilitation journey.

An Unexpected Home for Eddie

As part of Eddie’s next stage of rehabilitation, he has moved into a larger outdoor enclosure. Interestingly, this home started life as one of Global Rotomoulding’s 5000L Aquaculture Tanks, originally designed for aquaculture applications but now repurposed to help Australia’s native wildlife.

Seeing one of our products adapted into an echidna rehabilitation enclosure wasn’t something we anticipated, but it’s a reminder that the best solutions often come from unexpected places.

Eddie’s Official Product Review – Unexpected Housing Edition

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reviewer: Eddie 🦔

Occupation: Professional mulch inspector and worm quality assurance specialist

“Apparently my new home was originally designed by Global Rotomoulding as a 5000L aquaculture tank. Personally, I think the designers just hadn’t realised its true potential yet. What started life as an aquaculture vessel has now become my very own outdoor rehabilitation enclosure. Plenty of room, lots of privacy, and excellent digging opportunities.”

Pros:

✔ Large rehabilitation space for important echidna activities

✔ High-quality Australian-made construction

✔ Excellent mulch capacity

✔ Multiple hiding opportunities

✔ Suitable for naps and avoiding unnecessary social interaction

✔ Designed for aquaculture…accidentally perfect for echidnas

Cons:

✖ Carers somehow still find me

✖ Worm delivery times vary

✖ Humans get very excited whenever I appear in daylight

Overall Rating: 5/5 spines

“Global Rotomoulding may have built a 5000L aquaculture tank… but I can confirm they also accidentally created premium echidna real estate.”

The Real Heroes Behind Wildlife Rescue

This story isn’t just about tanks. It’s about the incredible volunteers and wildlife carers who dedicate enormous amounts of time, effort, and care to give injured and vulnerable native animals a second chance.

Behind every wildlife rescue is a team of passionate individuals juggling feeding schedules, veterinary visits, specialised care, and rehabilitation planning. Their work often happens quietly behind the scenes, but their impact is enormous.

To Eddie and all the amazing wildlife carers out there, thank you for the work you do for Australia’s native wildlife.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for more Eddie updates…although, judging by his personality, we suspect he’ll still be spending most of his time hidden in the mulch.
