7 benefits of using plastic tanks over steel tanks

Traditionally steel tanks have been the first choice for water storage, but they have limitations. For one thing, steel tanks are at the mercy of the elements and corrosion is a common issue. Discover the benefits of plastic tanks:

With the variety of rotomoulded polyethylene tanks available on the market it means that you can avoid corrosion and have a tank with a longer life. We look at 7 practical benefits of using plastic tanks over steel tanks.

1. Plastic tanks weigh less

Steel tanks weigh a lot more than plastic tanks and usually need the help of a crane to move them onto your property. In comparison, plastic tanks are lightweight and can be moved into position by hand, which is an advantage if there is hilly or rough terrain on your property.

2. Easier to position

The surface upon which steel tanks sit need significant preparation before the tank is installed. This can involve expensive steel rings and a concrete base to keep the bottom from rusting. Plastic tanks can sit on any flat surface as long as there’s nothing sharp underneath, some can also be positioned underground away from sight.

3. A wider variety

Steel tanks are circular with a coned roof. They may change in diameter but the basic shape is the same. Plastic tanks on the other hand, come in a wider variety of shapes and sizes. From rounded, to slimline, there is sure to be a plastic tank to suit your needs.

4. Blend better with the landscape

Plastic tanks come in a greater variety of colours than steel tanks. They can stand out or blend in with your home and landscape depending on the look you’re going for. They are suitable for both rural and urban use.

5. They won’t rust

As mentioned, the biggest advantage of plastic tanks over steel tanks is that they don’t rust over time and need to be replaced. Their longevity is also due to the fact that they are made to withstand the Australian climate. UV-inhibitors protect the tanks from degradation from sunlight.

6. Strong and durable

Steel tanks are hardy, but as their parts are welded or bolted together, side seams, joints and weld lines can become weakened over time. The rotomoulding process bonds plastic through speed and heat, with the use of a mould, so the final product is more durable and less likely to fall apart.

7. Better for drinking water

Steel tanks are galvanised with a zinc wall which, while not a health risk, can affect the taste of drinking water. Studies on some steel tanks have also shown a harmful level of lead. Many people are not comfortable in taking this risk with their drinking water. Plastic tanks are manufactured from food-grade safe, BPA-free polyethylene plastic so they’re 100% safe for storing drinking water.

Components of a high quality poly tank

What makes a poly tank so great? Lots of things! There are many components of poly tanks that justify their overall design as being perfect for Australian conditions.

We take a look at our above ground rainwater tanks to really nut out their best features.

1. Lightweight.

Let’s start with the most obvious bonus: plastic is light. But don’t be mistaken, it’s also incredibly durable, and strong too. This means it’s easy to move around, affording quicker installation. No more faffing about, paying for a bunch of contractors and heavy machinery to move your tank into place! If it’s on the larger side, the lifting lugs installed on top will assist with transportation.

2. Strong.

All of Global’s poly tanks are fitted with self-supporting roofs. These are designed for long-term, structural strength, unlike many other tank roofs which are prone to collapsing over time because of weak joints. You won’t have that issue with a rotomoulded poly tank, though, as it’s made from just one piece of plastic!

3. Safe.

Poly tanks are made from food grade PE. Global’s poly tanks comply with AS 2070; plastics for food contact use and AS/NZS 4020; products for use in contact with drinking water. Poly tanks do not rust like their steel counterparts. Rest assured that you’re receiving the purest rainwater around!

We also know that mosquitoes are pesky little blighters that can cause some pretty serious illnesses contracted through drinking water. That’s why all of our light guards and leaf strainers are mosquito repellant.

4. Weather resistant.

Poly tanks are basically the Terminator of rainwater tanks; they’re indestructible. We all know how harsh the Australian climate can be. That’s why Global have designed their poly tanks to withstand extreme heat and adverse weather. They won’t crack under pressure, and they’re UV resistant. On those outrageously hot summer days, even though the sun is beating down on your tank, the contents will be 100% safe from the heat.

Product testing innovative new plastic products

Product testing is a vital element of all Global’s custom projects. Particular emphasis is put on product testing to ensure 100% customer satisfaction, safety and reliability.

At Global Rotomoulding, we go by the philosophy that nothing should be a half effort! Our processes are detailed, our interaction with clients is constant, and all you have to do is take a look at our track record to see that we deliver the goods!

Client liaison

Close communication with clients is key to assist them in solving any problems they’re facing with designs, to improve their products or come up with a solution product. Our recent collaboration with Booth Transport involved Global designing a new toolbox made of plastic to house their sometimes leaky hoses, preventing rust and corrosion to their ute tray beds. We work with our clients to accumulate knowledge and come up with the best solution.

Product testing

All products undergo rigorous testing in a variety of environments to ensure durability and efficiency. We are constantly testing, noting any faults or challenges, and modifying these. We carry out a series of trials to determine the correct shot weight, cook and cool time for your product. At Global, we are an AS/NZS ISO 9001:2015 certified company and strictly adhere to the high standards that this invokes, which means that you will never receive a sub-par product from us.

Safety standards

An important aspect of product testing involves adhering to strict safety standards. At Global, our polyethylene is BPA free, meaning that it is safe to store drinking water in. Products such as our cartage tanks and rainwater tanks have been subject to stringent testing to ensure that they are completely safe.

Furthermore, Global are specialists in rotomoulding design, so we are aware of the ins and outs of plastic design, and know what to look out for when it comes to safety precautions during manufacturing. We also work closely with research and development engineers to ensure structural integrity. You can rest assured that all of your products are safe to use.

Sample products

Once we have completed testing and have a final product that we’re happy with, we will send it to you for your own product testing and evaluating before complete manufacturing begins. We are open to all feedback and adjustments to moulds and features. Unlike injection moulding, the moulds produced for rotational moulding are much cheaper, so if adjustments need to be made, new moulds are much more accessible. Here at Global, we won’t rest until you have the exact product you’re looking for!
